Some of you will think I am looking for who to blame, but the honest and breaking reality from Sheila Gashumba has been a long time discussion that happens among media people behind those media doors. The pain media people (TV presenters, Radio Hosts etc) go through, its time the public gets to know about it.
It's not that Media houses don't make money, they make a lot of money, and yes they are taxed a lot by the government which is the same story with any other private institutions in this country.
I have met media people that spend a year without salary, its abnormal but it's the reality. To me I still think there is a lot at stake that has made this situation even worse and normal to the media house owners who have continued to under pay their even hardworking and loyal employees
First lets talk about the labour industry, there is no reliable and implemented policies on wage, an employer takes one year even more without paying his employees and he can't be charged anywhere, does the government ever think of following up and supervising these private investors, Ugandans are being exploited, its not only media people, the problem is that we are in the spotlight which somehow should make these media houses to be ashamed and treat their employees well, the business is about PR, imagine your a struggling TV presenter, how do you maintain a good image for the TV/Radio brand.
In the case of Sheila Gashumba, she was bringing a lot of revenue to NTV, how many people waited to watch her everyday, how many businesses came to NTV because she brought them an audience, how do you wake up and pay her 50,000. Media people spend a lot to keep these brands respected, this costs money. IT'S A SHAME
On the other hand, there are many benefits in being a media personality (Radio host, TV presenter ). Most importantly Its a service to the people, you sit in that radio studio and there is a community person waiting for a word of encouragement from you, there is someone in his small muzigo waiting for you to play for her some inspirational music, we heal people, we motivate people, we encourage people, we inform people, we build people, we mend broken relationships, we mend broken hearts. THESE ARE THE REASONS THAT MOTIVATE SOME OF US TO STICK TO TV AND RADIO.
The biggest achievement to me apart from some fame, getting a person from some random people I have never met, thanking me for the encouraging words, this gets me emotional and motivated to go to studio the following day. People need us, the community needs us, this country is normal because of the FOURTH ESTATE. We deserve some serious appreciation and motivation. Mbyogede!!!!
